Colt Letter Update from a Gun Show Expert

    (*)Asterisk represents questionable comments.

I was at a gun show today, and a dealer I have seen over the years had a very nice engraved 3rd gen sheriff. He immediately told me it was factory. I asked him how he knew it was factory. He called up and talked to someone at Colt who said it was factory engraved(*.) I asked him if we could pull the grips, we did... Not factory, but ok. So I looked on the frame and I did not see ENG on the frame. I do not own a factory engraved 3rd gen, but should ENG COLT be on the frame? I digress... He then told me that Colt was bankrupt and they were no longer selling letters(*) I asked him when did he speak with someone? Did they charge him money for this information about his "Factory" engraved Colt? I then explained to him that I purchased a letter from Paul on Friday. I did not want to beat on him too bad, I am still interested in the gun. I just thought I would let everyone know that you can call Colt and get free information because they stopped selling letters.

Have a good week... Stay Classy Colt Forum

Never say never but the factory engraved 3rd. gens I've seen have Colt Eng on the grip frame. How much was your "expert" asking for the gun? Was the engraving well executed?

Sometimes you just have to shake your head and walk away. Its the one thing I hate about this obsession is the amount of BS you get from some dealers. Don't they know that it hurts their reputation or is it just expected.

I guess, maybe technically, Colt is no longer selling letters, but Colt Archive Properties is.

Once I was looking at a gun show dealer's S&W Model 57 .41 Magnum when he said "I have that one priced high because it was made back in the '50s." I said, "Wow, it must have been tough to get Ammo then since the .41 Magnum wasn't introduced till 1964."

Kinda like the dealer who had a premium price tag on a “factory nickel” commercial 1911.

I've been going to Montana gun shows (among others) since 1976 and can say I've run into as many numbskulls behind the tables as in front of them. That said, I've also become friends with a few truly knowledgeable guys at gun shows

One of my all time favorites was a gun show dealer that had a chrome plated Russian Tokarev pistol that was made for submarine commanders.

He was asking 3k on the gun, it had some kind of bone (not ivory grips.) The engraving was quite pleasing to the eye, that is why I have not written off the gun. As always "buy the gun, not the story." I am sure I will see him with this gun in the coming months and give an update.
