Colt SAA #357283, One Of The Pre-war/Post-war Single Actions.

It's a damned shame that someone stole the records on these last Colt Single Action sales! My problem here is that the assembly records show this gun as being a 357 x 7-1/2", when in fact it is a 38 special. It was assembled on 11-29-1940 and moved to the shipping room on 12-6-1940. No telling how long it laid in inventory. There is no thread relief in the frame, so it was likely intended to be a 357 Magnum. But at some time it was changed to a 38 Special with another 7-1/2" barrel and sold (to someone, somewhere).

Can I prove that it was shipped as a 38 Special? This gun is unfired, and the front of cylinder bears the number 83. It has been cocked many times, but has 100% unblemished blue of the front of cylinder. The chambers are 38 Special. The side of the barrel reads "Colt Single Action Army 38 Special". No number on barrel, as expected.

The rubber grips are obvious replacements.

    This isn't a pre-war post war colt,it's a pre-war,the pre-war post war guns didn't come out until 1946 or '47 I can't remember which.Back in 2002 I re-built a pre-war post war for the guy that was Vice President @ Colt from 1948 to 1955 & I can't remember his name now either,it had seen quite a lot of use over those yrs.My ser.# list shows this colt to have been made in 1939 starting w/ser# 357000 & running to ser# 357858 by 1940.

In my list, the lowest pre-war/post-war SAA is SN 357451. That one was in 38 special.
