The .44-40 get's my vote. It's noticeably softer shooting and more accurate, at least in my revolvers, than the .45 Colt. I have a .38-40 that is an enigma. It is less accurate and sharper recoiling than it's weight and .400 throats should allow. It isn't awful, but it ought to be better. Rather than experiment with it, I spend the time with my .44's and .45's. If I could have only one caliber, it'd be a .44-40.

The 45 Colt is the original chambering, thus it is my favorite. And I have for many years thought of the 45 Colt as a black powder cartridge and I shoot it that way. My most accurate load is 32g of FFFg behind a soft cast 250g RNFP. Touching off 5 of those in your single action will put a smile on your face if you have any feel for the history of the gun and cartridge.

Even though I like the 1873 model Colts(and replicas for that matter) in any caliber they were made (.44WCF and .45 Colt being my favourite chamberings).

    I'm going to be pedantic.

The Colt single action ARMY was made in only one caliber.

Even though...in the context of your remark... I basically got the gist what you meant, Kurusu...I still had to look that BIG word up !!

Adding sumptin' new to my vocabulary...that was very didactic of you Sir !!

Initially the SAA was made in .45Colt, that is right but soon all other calibers where added and even Colt itself is talking about the Single Action Army model in all calibers. So it can't be wrong when we also talk about that gun in same words.

the two 2nd Generation .44-40 are the Peacemaker Centennials from 1974, the thrid one on this pic is my Uberti Cattleman in .44-40

here are my 3rd Generation Colts in .45Colt, the New Frontiers are purely collectibles

my only 1st Generation SAA in .38-40 is also purely collectible, the 3rd Generation .357Mag I have since a few weeks and not yet tested on the range. It has mother of toiletseat grips and a nickel plated grip frame.

for all of my Peacemaker 22 models I have the extra cylinder in .22 Mag, the first .22 New Frontier will be added in May.

and here are all my Colt SAA models including the only Italian clone in one picture

Of course it's not wrong. I was just muddying the waters.
