    How to Remove A Stuck 1st Generation Cylinder Pin Bushing

    I recently bought a 1st Generation Colt SAA cylinder that had a cylinder pin bushing that was stuck in place and couldn't be easily removed. I thought about heating the cylinder with a torch, but feared this might damage the cylinder. After thinking about it for a while, I developed this simple procedure to safely remove the bushing. It worked great for me, so I thought other members might benefit from seeing my approach to this problem.

    Using a vise will give you control over the amount of pressure you apply to the back of the bushing. Remember to ground the end of the bolt flat so it sits flush against the rim of the bushing. My cylinder pin bushing was rusted in place and probably hadn't been removed for many years. Simply turning the vise handle was insufficient to push it out. To get it to budge, I had to tap on the vise handle several times with a hammer. In most cases, I think that turning the vise handle by hand will probably be sufficient.

    Curious why people are always trying to remove the bushing. There may a case were a bushing has to be removed for smith work but I feel (based on posts) that many folks think that just because it's removable it has to be removed.

    It's like any other moving part,it needs cleaned & lubricated once in awhile.

    Wouldn't the bolt need to be larger than 1/4"?

    A 1/4" bolt is almost exactly the size of the outer diameter of the bushing. If the bolt was any larger, it wouldn't fit through the hole in the cylinder.
