Typical case color used on my restorations. This one is the most recent.

I like the brighter case colors. This late 3rd Gen in the 67000 range was my first SAA,I loved the color but not the long barrel. I wished I had kept it.

The lacquered guns on the other hand simply jump out at you from the vibrant color combos.

Merely curious, as it has not faded even after spending its first ten years hidden in a floor rack behind the seat of my S-10 pickup. It has lived in a closet since then.

I have one of these 12 ga 088 Toppers myself. If I was to guess, my dad bought it for me for hunting fall of 1981. I recall it as $44 at the time. The receiver finish has held up similarly well. I wouldn't bet against it having been done by a packed furnace cch.

A technical point about this discussion re cyanide cch.... That can be done by dipping in a super heated liquid chemical solution, or can be done in a packed furnace where the hardening media is pre-mixed cyanide powder based rather than bone / charcoal meal. I don't think anyone is doing the boiling solution method here in the states.

    For whatever its worth department:

I contacted Trinity Guns, in England, and asked about their case hardened finish, which is very vibrant in colors. their response was that they send their frames out to be case hardened, but case hardening does not produce the color desired, so they add that "in house," presumable after the case hardening process.

Confirmed today from Turnbull that they color-cased the frames/hammers of this set in 2006. I'm guessing that TB did quite a bit of CC work for USFA?
