Here are pictures of my engrave 1890 that has Giraffe leg bone grips made by Ed Self (Self Made Grips). This is the gun that was found in an old chicken coop.

Elmer Keith talked about making some SAA grip from walrus he harvested in the Artic.

I've had a few dozen pairs made for 1911s in more recent time.

Elmer complained and finally replaced his walrus grips on his SAA because they warped after being made. The maritime ivory is very "wet" (green) and takes many years to dry out from my experience. Of the several dozen 1911s Mike was able to cut from some good size walrus tusks it was only about 1/3 or what I thought we might get. The inside of the tusks is not solid or capable of making grips from. There is a lot of waste. Getting dried tusk is all important. Easily half of the 1911 grips Mike Poulin was capable of cutting from my tusks...fully half.... warped beyond use.

Elmer went to elephant tusk....as did I.

    And never looked back.

How do you feel about Giraffe Bone Dane...

The example above and others I've seen make me crave them for the Uberti Remington 1875 I'll be picking up the 1st week of September.
