Easy for me to answer because I just bought it...7 1/2” .45 Colt, CCH and blued. Been waiting for months for a new production 7 1/2”. Lots of 4 3/4” and 5 1/2” lately but this was the first 7 1/2” I’ve seen. And all of my Colt SAAs are .45 Colt.

    .44 SPL or .38.40
I have couple of each and they have become my favorites.

I too answered .45 Colt. and also agree with those who went with the 7 1/2 barrel.

    Because that's what I got(that's what I was looking for too). A 1978 3rd generation.

My other preferred caliber was not in the poll. that would be the .44-40. Got no Colt in that caliber. Got to make do with an Uberti.

This here thread is lacking photos.

For years it was 45 Colt, but I have since changed my preference to 44spl and I have a 44-40 cylinder for it too.

.44-40 is my favorite. But I never met a .38-40 I didn’t want to take home.

I would say .44 Special simply because I already have a 4 3/4" SAA in .45 Colt. Many have said the .44 and .45 revolvers balance better than the .38/.357 or other calibers. I guess it has to do with less steel in the big bores due to the larger chambers and thinner barrel and how the piece balances in your hand.
