Boy, what a shame she let a dealer/salesman come get it from her, after talking to you. Too late now, but could you have put $500 down on it, and said, "whatever he offers you, I will match it, PLUS this $500"? Or said, "I'll be there too, so you can have 3rd party confirmation that you aren't getting ripped off"...or such. ANYTHING to prevent another buyer with cash and knowledge to arrive on scene without you knowing what's going on is preferable. I've been known to get in a car and start driving to the sellers house IMMEDIATELY and tell them I'm coming.

I've had things sold out from under me a few times, and learned some tricks of the trade. It's how you can get the rare ones, that you will only see once in a lifetime. You have to move very fast, and very aggressively, while being very nice at the same time.

It was unfortunate that the dealer bought this one so quickly and likely quite cheaply. I was hoping it would end up on the classifieds section of the forum where I and others might have had a shot at it.

Do you have the complete serial? If so, post it and we’ll keep an eye out for it.

That would have been one to have. Hope she got a fair price for the lot. What ever it consisted of. Back in December I got a 1941 issue 1911 one of three guns from an individual that paid less than $1000 for the lot. Thing is, seller was happy with the deal.

I noticed the VP in the triangle too, meaning Verified Proof which wasn't used until 1904. Even though guns were Proofed from around 1896-1900, they weren't stamped with the VP. I suspect a changed damaged trigger guard too. I'd like to see the serial numbers.

Are you looking to sell this Colt?
Whatever you have planned, my recommendation is to request a Colt letter.
