Colt certified gunsmiths/refinishers/engravers in the n.e. Usa

Title says it all---this is the group that would know. Dealing with Colt is a frustrating experience, but I know they have many contractor shops that they deal with.

Similarly, I have several S&Ws; I'm sure that some of these contractors handle both.

TIA for any leads/input/suggestions you may have.

I don't believe Colt certifies anyone past a warranty center but don't know that for sure.

Adams and Adams...has engraved any number of guns for both factories. And they are exceptionally nice gentlemen to deal on any engraving project. Which is hard to say about many engravers or engraving jobbers. In 25+ years and many projects with A&A I have never been disappointed.

I doubt there are any single sources that do repairs, refinishing and engraving, certainly not in the North East.
The Colt factory Custom Shop can probably do it all on a SAA but this could take some time and at a high cost, IF the Custom Shop is even taking work right now.
You could ask them to recommend who they use for engraving and refinishing.

There are some SAA expert gunsmiths known to the forum, including Peacemaker Specialist....

Colt Single Action Army Revolver Specialists ? Peacemaker Specialists, Paso Robles California

I think that forum member Jim Martin either does SAA gunsmithing or can recommend a top expert.
Check the member list and contact him

Refinishing of a SAA is a critical choice since you'll probably need someone who does both absolute top quality polishing for the blue AND is a true expert on color case hardening.
As far as I know the best are Doug Turnbull, who does work for Colt, and Ron's.
Both are absolute top firearms restoration experts.
    Both are expensive.

    http://www.ronsgunshop.com/

In all likelihood you'd want to get the guns gunsmithed first, engraved second, and refinished last.
Some engravers also do or can have refinishing done by companies they work with. I'd check with the engraver about this.
One who advertises top engraving and refinishing is Baron....

    https://www.baronengraving.com/

The best engravers are members of the American Engravers Guild. I'd look through their list of members and do some research....

    http://www.fega.com/

For gunsmithing on S&W revolvers, the S&W factory may still offer gunsmithing for them.
Another top expert is Frank Glenn, a member here.
He's well known for Colt double action revolver work but also does S&W. He gets top reviews for prices, turnaround, and quality of work.

Frank Glenn-Glenn Custom Complete Gunsmithing Service Glendale AZ

Other gunsmiths for S&W revolvers you might check with........

    https://www.hyattgunstore.com/retail/gunsmithing/

http://smithgun.com/ (web site is down at the moment).

For S&W refinishing, there are few sources you can trust not to botch the polishing and ruin the gun.
The following are top experts who don't destroy nice guns........

    https://gunbluing.com/

    https://precisionbluing.com/

A possible top source is APW/Cogan possibly the top all around refinisher, but he may not offer a S&W level bright polish.

Accurate Plating & Weaponry | Gunsmith In Newville, Alabama

Ford's is well known for offering a brilliant polish Colt Royal Blue level "wet look" bright blue refinish.....

As one might imagine not every project commissioned goes smoothly.

I've also dealt with the majority of the firms listed on dfaris' list. I only recommend people I have dealt with personally and found deserving.

Three of the best known and most respected custom shops are located in the NE. All three of them have done contract work for Colt at some point. Any one of them can handle gunsmithing, engraving, refinishing on a Colt SAA. One would be John Adam Sr and his shop. The other obvious shops that can do the same, and are at the same skill level or have sub contractors they work with that are (just as John Adams does) are Turnbull's and Nutmeg Sports. I don't use any of them for the majority of 1911 work and have never done much S&W work. But for a Colt SAA all three and their sub contractors are top notch. These three shops deal with any problems that arise in house, so you don't have too. They are really good at what they do (getting fully finished guns done for customers) and it is part of what you pay for using their services. All are highly respected and easily recommended without reservation. I have Colt projects currently being worked on by at all three companies. With thousands upon thousands of personal and customer dollars invested over years, I previously listed the one company that I generally prefer for many reasons. But I still use all three shops and have for 30 years. I've also commissioned work by a likely 2 dozen or so independent engravers and used any number of refinish shops in that time frame. All the while living in the western US.

A nice effort by John Adams Sr.

Not Colt certified but I have great experience with Tyler Gun Works, Friona TAX. His craftsmanship, refinishing, and engraving put his shop and associates in a class limited to just a few in the country.

I have the good fortune to have examples of custom work from both Doug Turnbull and Bobby Tyler. Both are excellent finish and tuning. Both did great job of Color Case and Blueing. Tyler's work was more extensive restoration including beautiful engraving. I doubt either could be beat. Tyler's Blueing was done to represent period factory blue. Added a S&W 5 screw K.38 that Tyler refinished. Not extensive restoration but CC and Blueing are still outstanding. Hope this helps. BTW, Colt did a great job on a early Combat Commander through one of their subs. The gun was beautiful and accy job terrific.
