How is the barrel marked on the caliber Terry? "Colt Single Action Army 38-40" ?
Always interested in adding nice, original or interesting pre 1940 single actions to my private collection. Contact me via PM.

Jim, I had expected the marking to be as you posted, but it was of the older style.

This would have been during the Depression so nothing got thrown away and everything was re-purposed.

I have looked through my list of Colt Letters that I obtained from Bill Dascher for guns of that era. His list shows about 20 SAA's in the 354xxx to 357xxx range. There are no 38 WCF guns in that list. Maybe a left over barrel as you state.

Is the matching serial number written on the bottom of the box.
This all started with one gun!

Yes. In my communications with Paul S. at Colt Archives, he thinks the serial number for this one will be in the 'lost ledger.'

Colt did this same thing in the '30's on their .32 Officers Model Targets. Apparently not enough of them were produced to make up a special label, so they just put a .32 sticker over the .38 nomenclature.

If one looks closely, there appears to be at least 3 label, each on top of the other. The bottom-most label is totally covered.

All I can look at is the condition of the gun made in my birth year. The gun has held up better than me.
