Hello all.... I stopped by at a LGS and found this for sale. I am new to the python and was wondering what the experts think would be the value with its current condition. The pictures are from my cell phone and I tried to get the blemishes. Please let me know what you think.
Also...the asking price is $XXXX. The serial number puts it at 1957 SN#5211. There is no paperwork or box.

Agreed, but there are people on every forum, even if they are just lurkers, who are just that.
Sales price is based on value of the item, not what you paid. Economic goods, whatever the market will bear. Good deals do not necessarily get passed on to consumers.

Mr. ping10 is correct. Personally, I am a firm believer in "I don't care what you paid for something, I only care what I am paying for it."
Unfortunately there are a lot of people who do the A+B thing as ping10 stated. This is why many dealers remove prices on sold items from their websites. While I find it frustrating at times, I can understand the respect for other people's privacy. How much someone pays for something, how much money they make at their job, what they pay in taxes, etc. is their business unless they choose to share it with others.

Good for you sir, whatever you decide to do with it. People sub work to me and I sub work to them in my field. I can tell you that I do not care for a minute how much they are making off the work they sub to me as long as I make my margin. The rest is their business

I used to buy a lot of guns from WT's back when I went through Goldsboro every couple weeks. Always had a lot of neat stuff to look at.
Everyone has their own sense of right and wrong. Someone trying to get proper information on a purchase and then someone else using information gained from the request for help to slide in and snag a deal using information gained from a post asking for input is imho shady. Now if they posted that they had seen xxx at the local store and if anyone was interested, that is different. Kinda reminds me of the vultures circling after a funeral

I'm glad you got it, it looks nice. Here's how I handle collecting (any antique) and buying. I don't ask anyone for a price opinion. I do my own research and take my own chances. I research comparable items that have actually sold, on several sites and live auction histories. I don't mention the particulars on any forum. It's not difficult for someone to research where you live, check a few gun shops, and buy it before you return. But I collect more rare items (Pre Civil War antique photographic equipment) and you have to be VERY cautious or another collector will be tipped off, and buy it out from under you. For example with guns, if you say, "how much is a 4 digit Python worth?" the next question is "where is it? (rationalized by the idea prices are different in different areas). The second question is "do you have pictures" (which also identify the serial number - making searches easier). The last question is "what did you pay?" which really isn't anyone's business if you think you'll sell it in the future.
For determining my price, I acknowledge that selling online the world is your market, so prices are higher. In a shop, I deduct for that fact. If Pythons like you found sell for $1900-$3000, the shop will probably be asking $3000. If they are asking the low end, it's getting interesting. If they are asking well below the range, I probably will consider getting it, depending on how low. To me, there is no reason to ask someone a value on something commonly sold - you risk tipping an unscrupulous person off to look for it. After you buy, then you can show it off, and know one has to know where you got it. Never reveal your sources.

How do you know it has been there 2 years. Did you call them and they mentioned that they have had a lot of calls. If so thats too funny. I'd shoot it and take care of it as is. it has obviously already been shot, so what harm can you do? I would probably keep the loads on the lighter side, but enjoy it. Just keep it out of the holster lol
Again, to avoid risk and disappointment (as they say on tv ads!), don't post about a potential purchase. Talk about it AFTER you buy, and don't mention your source. Keeps everyone honest.
