When repairing a 1st gen saa hammer with broken notches, after weld build up, how does the smith go about determining the location and depth for the new notches? Is there a pattern available to scribe onto the built up surface?

WALKERS:
Typically the depth is not effected, only the shelf. So to build them up means not cutting the notch itself deeper.
The full cock notch is usually at the proper depth but the edges worn.
99,99% or hammers can be repaired without the SAA in hand.
Of course having the entire gun is always best-case scenario.

Every picture I have seen shows them welded up after completely removing the metal with the notches in it, so I was a bit confused.
When you get mine (I haven’t made it into town yet to the post office) I hope I can convince you to take a few process pictures, as I am interested in how it gets done.
