A local friend has a 44-40 cal. 1886 SAA. According to the Colt letter., it came with factory wood stocks (nice!).
He mentioned he wanted to send it out to a gunsmith for a good cleaning and have the timing checked.

Although I don't collect SAAs, I know that Frank Glenn is highly recommended to do work on all generations of Colt revolvers. I suggested he contact Mr. Glenn.
He mentioned he was thinking of sending his Colt to a business called Peacemaker Specialists in CA.

Are any of you gents familiar with this gunsmith and can give me some feedback for my friend?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Members here: Jim Martin and Bill Fuchs (aka Lever Action Bill) for your SAA needs. Both can be messaged on this forum. A search of these guys will find nothing but highest regard.

Frank Glenn has an outstanding reputation for firearms smithing skills. I generally associate Frank with double action revolvers and 1911 type.

Eddie Janis doesn't do first generation guns anymore. I contacted him about a year ago and was told he doesn't work on 1st gens, only late 2nd and 3rd gen. Don't know if that's changed recently but I can personally concur with Vic regarding Jim Martin and Bill Fuchs ( lever action Bill ). Both have done excellent work for me, Jim doesn't make grips anymore, but does outstanding action work, Bill makes beautiful grips and does refinishing services as well as mechanical work. You can't go wrong with either.

I had Jim Martin fix hammer notches/and tune action etc and I highly reccomend his work. Nothing against Lever Action Bill but have not had him do any work for me.
Thanks

I can add Jim Cornwall, a close friend of Jim Martin.

Jim passed away a few months back.

I've done business with every one mentioned in the thread to date. Jim Martin is my preferred 1st Gen smith by a good margin for the required work mentioned. Alan is exceptional for bigger jobs. Either come highly recommend. Frank is good, as is Eddie at Peacemaker Specialist. Also a significant price difference and time lag between the first 3 and Eddie. Just my experience with those mentioned that I would recommend. I believe the first two are the cream of the crop.

Jim Martin performed his magic on two of my Colt's. While the cost of Jim's work was very reasonable, it was a very expensive endeavor to do a temporary import into the US and then have them returned.....BUT I would not hesitate to do it all over again!

As long as Jim Martin is willing to work on SAAs, he's the only smith I will send my Colts to.

Best regards,
