Aside from the above admonishments, you can have the hammer rebuilt. Call Bob James in Phoenix, he will fix it right. James Guns on the web. AS Leo said, never pull the trigger on half cock. Colt hammers are hardened, the small notch is prone to snap. Second gen hammers are not cheap, fix it don't replace it, cheaper. Q

I wouldn't pull the trigger if the hammer is any position but full cock!
When loading I bring the hammer from the loading notch (halfcock) to full cock then carefully lower the hammer.
To make sure your hammer is down on an empty chamber with a Colt (& true Colt clones) load one chamber, skip one chamber, then load the next 4 chambers, bring the hammer to full cock & carefully lower it. It will be on the empty chamber.

Good luck getting your hammer repaired.
You might check the tip of the trigger too to make sure it isn't damaged as well.
