3\" Factory Python

This is a Colt Python with a 3" barrel, serial number K562XX, manufactured in 1981. There is a red ramp front sight. The grips on the gun when I bought it were rubber pachmayr with a colt medallion. Yesterday I received my factory letter from Colt. The revolver was shipped to a dealer in West Allis, Wisconsin on 3/15/83 with a 3 inch barrel and Royal Blue finish. The type of stocks was "not listed."

I have seen posts about the California Combat python by Lew Horton. I was curious if anyone owns or is familiar with a 3" python.

Interestingly enough, there's one posted currently on Gunbroker: ]http://gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=10020351] http://gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=10020351
Serial number K05205 with the original box and wearing wood grips. I contacted the owner and he stated the gun is original, including the grips.

AND on Gunsamerica a 3" Colt Python that started life with a 6" barrel and the original owner sent the gun to Colt to have the barrel replaced with a 3" one. http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976329532.htm

EJ: That is a very interesting Python you have there. I can't remember ever seeing a 3" barrel Python before, although I have seen spare 3" barrels offered for sale in the past. What is Colt charging for a factory letter these days? Charlie

I think you can get a letter from Colt for $75.00. Call them and check. With this gun, it would probably be worth it. That is a real collectable.

Re: 3\" Factory Python

I remember wanting a 3" Python *bad* in the mid-'80s. I really like that barrel length on a CCW gun. I was ready to buy one and have Reeves Jungkind slick it up even more... and I got laid off. Ah, well!

In the '83 period under discussion, they were not a custom proposition, though I don't know if they actually made it into the catalog. I never saw one in stainless, only blued, but the blued 3 inchers were marketed by several wholesalers; they were actually a few bucks *less* than a 4" model. Are you ready for this? They wholesaled for $370-390 and retailed for about a hundred bucks more! By '85, the MSRP had increased another $200.

In the early '80s, Colt-medallioned Pachmayrs were available for almost all frames and were often offered by the factory. My gut feeling is that the "not listed" factory letter notation would tend to confirm they're original.

For those that are contemplating a change, Gun Parts Corp. has 3" barrels (blued only) available for just under a C-note.

I handled a 3"er here around 1990. It was sweet, but I couldn't find the money
