3\" Python

I have a Python with a 3" barrel that I asked about information on about 4 months ago. It raised more questions than answers. So, I plunged and ordered a factory letter (it only took 4 months!). The letter confirms the factory 3 inch barrel. My Python was shipped from the factory on September 29, 1982, to the Ellett Brothers, Inc. in Chapin, South Carolina. My Python came with both small service stocks and target stocks, both factory, and it is in 99% condition. I am not an avid Colt collector and would appreciate any input on a ballpark value of my Python. Thanks in advance. And no, it is not for sale. <font color="blue"> </font>

Just what is it we're voting on? Do we like the 3 inch better than the 3 inch? Did I miss something? -Asa

I know where one is right now, but we are hung up in haggling. It's like new in the box with all the goodies and he wants $2100. Although I want it I refuse to pay that price for it.

Re: 3\" Python

I am going to try and be realistic:

Considering it is very much a seller's market, the rarity of the three inch, and also attempting to keep it fair...

I would put a $1500 - $1700 price tag on it if truely in excellent condition.

That's just my 2¢ opinion. Many seller's will hold out and probably get more. But that's what I would be willing to pay.

(Wow, my 100th post! Guess I am now an official member of the team.)

Although I would never give it, I agree with the $1500-1700. For that price It'd have to be in the box.

I agree with the prices on the above posts. A 3" Python is a real rarity. My son and I are what I would call casual revolver collectors. Some of you are much more serious about this than we are, and that in my opinion is what is driving the market. We have been extremely lucky lately to find some great deals on fairly rare guns, but that dosen't happen all the time. We are looking for a nickel 2-1/2" Python to go with our blued, and SS ones. If I want one right now, its going to cost me around $1,200.00. By waiting I may find one cheaper, or I may never. Someone is going to want that 3" real bad, and I think the seller will get his price. Good luck!

Howdy, horsegunner.

If you go 3 pages back in the history of this forum you could find the answer to where you might find Python barrels.

As for the changing of a barrel on the Python, be ware!

This is -according to the senior members of this forum- a specialist job, not to be trusted to any other gunsmith. It requires special equipment and handling of your Python, you wouldn't be the first to absolutely ruin a perfect gun by giving this task to a gunsmith with out the proper tools and knowledge.

Perhaps the colt company or the colt agent in Canada can tell you who can be trusted with that task.

Best of luck.

Boy thats a question! How does one get a pistol from Canada to the U.S. for resale. I always thought we could not carry handguns into Canada even to hunt, and vice versa. One of you folks must have an answer to this.

I could never bastardize a Colt. Just sell the 4" barreled Python and buy a 6" barreled gun.

Can you believe the 3" Python is winning by a large margin? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: 3\" Python

The only reason I want to change the barrel from four inch to six is to comply with Canada's Federal Laws which makes any gun with a four inch barrel or shorter a prohibited pistol, stupid yes but what choice do I have.To find a six inch python in Canada cost mega bucks, and they are hard to find..Thats another reason selling the 3 Inch Combat Python. There is also a rumor these guns will not be allowed to be used on the gun range soon ,so fix them sell them or turn in to the Feds to be Chopped.Canada is going the same route as the UK and Auzies. But were going with a fight.

Horsegunner,

To get your pistol into the US the buyer will have to fill out importation paperwork. I imported several Brno rifles into the US from Canada a few years ago before they were generally available here and the paperwork wasn't a big deal, it was just one page if I remember correctly. It mainly amounted to the Canadian seller describing the gun, serial number, etc. and then customs matched the form to the guns. The guns were then cleared for shipment on to the FFL holder and then transferred to the buyer just like any other gun. If you work out a deal with someone for a sale the buyer can give the ATF a call and they will send him the forms.

Horsegunner:

I'm in Canada too and owner of a 4" Python. While they government has slapped new restrictions on prohibited rifles that are being challenged in court there are hundreds of thousands of prohib handguns in circulation and in Ontario at least I've been assured that they intend to treat them like any other handgun as far as permits are concerned.

I'd enjoy your Pythons in the meantime and shoot them as is. That's my plan. If the government ever decides to start making changes then think about putting on a longer barrel or exporting.

Horse Gunner,

If you have sold your gun and it is to be imported into the States I believe that the following form is what I used when I did an importation from Canada a few years back.

http://www.atf.treas.gov/forms/msword/f53303a.dot

Your sale would be covered under General Information Note #3. Occasional Importation of Sporting Arms.

Thanks for the info, seems like a lot of red tape but not really. Just get it right the first time, Talked to my local dealer and he is going to ship it for me as he does it all the time.
