The .38 (Long) Colt gets a lot of bad press and indeed it should never have been a first line military cartridge, but for just plinking fun I like this conversion based on a 2nd Generation Colt 1861. Kenny Howell of Beloit, WI did the work many years ago and instead of having him line the barrel down to .357 inch I had him leave it at a nominal .375 inch. So I have to shoot hollowbase bullets in it with either black powder or smokeless. In fact I just loaded up about 500 Speer 148 grain wadcutters.
