Colt Letter Spelling

Note the two different ways "Pequeno" and "Pequano" are spelled in some of the above Colt Letters.

I'm apparently not the only one who is sometimes confused.

Oh well. I'm probably mispronouncing it anyway. Thanks, Joe

Thanks for doing a follow up with the letters. I had a talk with Beverly, the Colt Historian, about the correct spelling and sent her proof of literature and original boxes with the Pequeno name that was published back in the 1930's. She indicated that the ledger book had it spelled Pequano and that is what they had been putting on the Colt letters. She has evidently made the change so that the letters go out with the correct spelling.

These were guns that had some sort of flaw in the finished product. Apparently Colt sold most of these guns "South of the Border". Usually, the flaw was simply cosmetic. As usual, Colt did not waste anything!
I have heard that a few times but really don't believe it's true. I have several Pequeno's and they are all in perfect condition. Besides, Colt serial numbered them all in one group so it's hard to believe that a large serial number batch, several thousand, all had flaws.

Good to hear a report based on firsthand observation. Until now I assumed 'Pequeno' was Spanish for 'made on Monday.'

In addition to what the thecoltguy said, all of the letters shown here show stateside shipping addresses, not Mexico!

Interesting stuff, any other theories on what a pequeno model is?

Did all Pequeno models come in .32 caliber or where there other calibers as well?
Yes, they were all in .32 caliber and they came in several different barrel lengths as well as nickel finish. Here are a few:

Many of them had the letter B on the barrel:

Here is the brochure for the Pequeno that was printed in Spanish along side of the same brochure for a Police Positive .32. Note how the Police Positive brochure calls out small frame. The word Pequeno in Spanish means small.

Interesting that some of these were made with hard rubber stocks when all but the pocket positive had discontinued the hard rubber stocks. So none of the barrels were marked "Pequeno"? So are all of these made on the 32 frame?

Correct. The gun itself was not marked "Pequeno". Some, but not all, barrels were "B" marked. Note Cam's 2" "B" marked and my 4" "B" marked pictures above. I believe some boxes may (?????) have had a "Pequeno" label. Not sure. Also, note that the Colt letters make no mention of "B" barrels. Thanks, Joe
