I purchased a cream puff 9mm Combat Commander this past weekend at my favorite local gun store.
It's blued, very nice shape, and came with 2 Colt magazines as well as the box, manual and assorted paperwork.

My question right now is about the magazines. They are blued except for the very bottom and that portion appears to have a parkerized finish.

So why the two tone finish?

I have noticed that the Metalform M mags have the duller or flat blueing on the bottom versus the Checkmate C supplier which seem to have a higher polished base.

The bottoms were sandblasted before blueing. Probably easier to sandblast than to polish out before blueing. The sandblasting hides a multitude of sins.

I have one of the Commanding Officers 9mm(1 of 500). It was customized by Ted Yost at Heirloom Precision. All of the Colt marked Metalform mags I have are all like yours. I suspect since the bases are welded on the bead blasted finish comes out better looking.

The Colt pistols also had polished flats and sandblasted rounds and edges, so I suspect that on top of covering the spot welds it also gave the base of the magazine the same finish as on the pistol.

I hate to be nosey but I have a combat comm. 9mm that was made prior to 70 , just wondering what these animalas were worth. mine is bluing challenged maybe 65% but low round count. Dont want to sell, just wondering. Really sweet piece no box or paper

Correct. Combat Commander production started in 1970.

So it would be a series 70, I thought it was pre series 70, oh well makes me no difference. Still makes an awesome truck gun I can carry this and not have a fit if it gets a little abuse.

If it is a "Combat Commander" then it was made '70 or later, and it is NOT a "Series '70" - that was only on Government Model guns and used a collet bushing/barrel combination not fit on Commander models. You would call yours a "pre-Series 80" since it was before the fp block safety. I think pre-80 9mm Combat Commanders are very sweet shooting guns; I haven't found a wonder nine of any type that matches it.
