Love your work, I'm a jeweler from down under and good engravers are few and far between these days, you are in my opinion at the top of the heap with that quality and even the design is as good as anything in all the big glossy Colt books, Brian you're definitely an engraving legend! Here's one of my Airguns I had done by Australia's best.

Brian,

Very nice work.

I have noticed two styles of background "shading" that engravers use - one being a stippled technique like I see on your guns and the other being a punch-dot technique. Do those styles/techniques have specific names in the industry? Do you use a punch to get that look?

Thanks,

Tim

Thanks for the kudos.
...and to 5758andrew: That's a good looking air rifle. I don't know who the best engraver is Australia is, but it looks like he's earned the title.
Don't know where in Australia you call home, but I have family in Lalor, Melbourne.
I have a very good friend in New Zealand that is also the best engraver in that country---His name is Andrew Biggs.
In answer to the background question Tim: you guessed it---the different techniques are indeed called "Stippled" or "Dot Punch".
I used a stippling tool for most of this work. It is just a carbide tool bit sharpened to a needle point.

How interesting! You're that close to my Aunt, Uncle & cousins.
Next time I'm down there, we'll have to get together---probably going to be a while. I don't get out much.
If ever you do make it Brian keep my contact so as we can meet up, hey even though you don't have a bench down here may-be you could bring your hand tools and use our jewelers bench to engrave a Colt cylinder for me, sorry I guess there ain't time for that when on holidays!

JPC709...Thanks for the kind words.
@jrbman, Not just Colts. If it's engraveable, I'll cut it. Right now, I have a SS Ruger Alaskan, Kimber 1911, SS Bond Arms Derringer, Uberti SAA, S&W Model 27 and 2 Colt SAA's in the queue.
