I was pretty impressed with the work done to this old pistol. I'm confident the refinish wasn't done as a restoration, but simply to clean up the pistol. The former owner had used and shot the pistol for years. The original SA stocks were still on the pistol, but they were so worn they looked totally out of place. I had a nice pair of repro SA stocks I took off another refinished pistol a couple years ago. I figured eventually the right pistol would come along to use them...and it did. The stocks have 11 rows of checkering between the points of the large diamonds, so they look relatively correct.

The pistol still had almost all it's original SA "S" marked parts. Only a few little insignificant internals had been replaced...probably when the pistol was refinished.

What I found refreshing about this pistol is that the color of the (re)finish is really accurate. It had a ratty WWII mag with it, so I put in a nicely refinished WWII M.S. Little mag. Also came with a well-worn 1917 date M1916 holster.

After I thoroughly cleaned the pistol and put the stocks on, it turned out having a pretty nice appearance. If I were walking past it at a gun show, I'd have to pick it up to determine it has been refinished.

Scott, I'm embarrassed for you for having to own that pistol. Since we're such good friends, just go ahead and ship that old thing to me and I will send you a newer and nicer pistol. We'll just keep this between us.

The Springfield Armory Model 1911 was unique in that it was originally finished in rust blue, or browning as it was called at that time. The only blue finishes available at the time the Model 1911's were manufactured was either heat blue or rust blue. The person that refinished that one did a good job of duplicating the look of the original rust blue.

The Springfield Armory magazines were also unique in that the bottoms were gas welded on rather than pinned like the Colts. Springfield felt that this made a stronger magazine. The rainbow color is the heat line from the gas weld.
