Have a March 1954 flyer on the "new" .38 Special Trooper, showing the "options",including the fully checkered target stocks.

Prices;$5.50 on the gun extra, and stocks alone, $7.50.

Trooper, w/standard (wood by 1954) and regular hammer was $71.50. Add $3.73 for a target hammer on the gun,and $6.50,for the hammer alone.

Looks like the stocks have gone up at a much higher rate than the gun!

So,a guess is sometime in 1953,probably for the Officers Models, but I don't have a 1953 flyer on those!

I think the Colt Target grip first appeared in 1952.

The first Colt to have them was the Officer's Model Match of 1952.
The Officer's Model Special was made from 1949 to 1952 and I've seen late versions with the First type, fully checkered Target grips.
Whether these were post-factory owner add-ons, or whether Colt actually started using these on the Special, I don't know.
