there are, actually, two kinds of preban rifles. the first are pre-1989 foreign imports (eg: AKs, FALs, HKs, GALILs). second relates to the 1994 AW ban that has sunset. the AR15 preban guns have "cosmetic" features that were deemed bad by gov't edict. these are: pistol grip, large magazine, flash supressor, bayonet lug. any combination of 3 or more of these on a semiauto rifle made it subject to the federal ban. since the sunset a gun with these features is now legal to produce. i don't think colt is selling any AR15s to the public. oh, BTW, colt also did some internal changes to the AR15A2 bolt carrier in the late 80s early 90s in order to make them less "convertable" to full auto.
