AR-15 SP1 Now Classified As A "Curio-Relic"

1831 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  TheAverageShooter
I searched the forums but couldn't find this topic, so if one does exist, I apologize.

I own an AR-15 SP1 and have recently learned that it has now been added to the list of "Curio-Relic" weapons. I have no intention on selling this weapon but have seen the prices for these rifles jump in the last few years.

Mine still shoot well and is in great condition. I don't get to shoot it much, but do keep it clean.

If you own an AR-15 SP1, what are your thoughts about this weapon? Can you believe it is now listed as a curio-relic firearm?

I looked at the current list and did not see the SP1 specifically added by model. Some would fall under the 50 year old provision. Watch your serial numbers carefully.

Yes, that's it, some of the early ones now are hitting the 50+ year old mark, so are classified as C&R. I have one manufactured in 1964.

Is there a site that you can check firearm serial numbers? I have yet found a way to do this.

BATF has the latest list on-line of which guns are curio and relic. Once a gun reaches 50 years old, it’s a C&R automatically. Sometimes a whole model is given a C&R status even though some are not 50 years old, such as a Colt officers model match revolver. Sometimes all it takes is a letter to BATF to include a certain model and they make the ruling. I have been meaning to write to them to include the Colt sharps rifle of only a little over 500 were made.

Where did you get this list? My SN isn't even shown.

Do you have a link to their online list? I went to the ATF's site and couldn't find any link to the CR list.

Google. If you google "How to date a SP1" several sites comes up with that list.

What is your serial number? Is it higher than SP158201?
Once SP1 rifles are classified as C&R, I’m sure people will be putting in for C&R FFLs lol. Heck, when some of the more modern rifles do, people are going to love it. When I’m in my 60s, there’s going to be a lot covered by the 50 year clause.
