could someone please tell me what is the most comprehensive book or website dealing with what a collector should look for in 1st generation SAA model and 1877 lightning revolvers?

I don't know about the Model 1877 but for the SAA, the Graham, Kopec and Moore book, "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver" is the best reference, in my opinion.
