Can anyone tell me what year this gun was made ? I tried

to look it up on Colts site and also called Colt ( and waited on hold (2) times for 20 minutes each ) before finally hanging up twice. Their customer service SUCKS ! It is an AR-15 and the serial number is: sp139788. Can any of you help me ? Thanks in advance.

1981.

Google is your friend. Google colt SP1 serial and there u go.

I confirm the 1981 manufacturing date of your rifle with documentation on the link below.

At the Retro Black Rifle site link, click on the Civilian Rifle and Carbines, then click on the Dating your SP1 Serial Number Ranges.

Also from AR15.com Retro forum SP1 Data Base they also shown your serial number range was made in 1981, serial number ranges made that year was SP130XXX to SP1582XX.
