Finally got a chance to shoot my new to me Challenger last week and I had several FTF stove pipe issuses. I only had some old Federal American Eagle 40 gr LRN with me.

Do you think it was just the ammo or could there be something else wrong?

I would at least try a couple more brands of ammo before I did anything else. If it shoots OK with different ammo everything is probably fine, but if it does the same thing you may have a problem. Was it clean and lubricated?

I did clean and lightly lube it.

I will try some other ammo on my next trip.

I doubt if the spring is the issue. That mag will come apart and they get really dirty to the point of interfering with the follower. Clean it up and try it.
