I was looking closely at the two and was wondering what the diff. was?

Obviously there were different years and to cover each and every phase would be nuts to cover.....so I guess I am specificly asking about the most modern era. (full lug extractor)

The most obvious difference is that Cobras are built on an aluminum frame and the DS is built on a steel frame.

As an aside, a police LT that I know once shot the Alabama State yearly qualification with a DS and scored 92%. That course included 25 yard fire, with six rounds left handed!

auh....that would make sense.

So what makes the Viper unusual? A larger framed (alum) Cobra?

You're right, the Viper is basically a 4" Cobra. What's "special" is that it was only made for one year, 1977.
