Could have been someone trying to change the serial number without altering or removing the original serial number.

As bruno mentioned the Pocket Hammerless .380 serial numbers didn't get that high.

According to Brunner, 1908 .380's did not reach beyond s/n 138010
This is a true 17744 .380 made circa 1914/5...
Or . . . it's a 1903 Pocket Hammerless .32 from @ 1915 that has had the slide and barrel changed. Is the slide numbered as well?

Subject pistol is not mine, I'll check with friend and report later about this suspicion

Update: no serial number appears in slide
