Just bought a Colt 1917 45ACP.The pistol is in very good condition and shoots great for an old war horse. On the bottom of the pistol grip is marked US ARMY model 1917 NO 21 412.This is not the ser no.Does any one know what the numbers mean? The ser no is 172904 B.It also has a inspection mark left side of the frame GHS in a circle. Thanks for any info.

Thanks for the info,I thought it may be a Unit number,as on my 1916 DWM Luger. Is there any way to trace what Unit it was issued to?

The military, as far as I know, donot retain small arms issuance records.

Nice acquisition and an early one. Congrats.
