Colt 5.56 UPPER FOR MY 901

Finally after a few years of trying to rat-hole away some cash from too many other projects; looks like i should finally be able to fund a dedicated Colt 5.56 upper to go with my LE901-16S in the next few weeks. My plan has always been to get one of the LE6940CK complete upper kits, so as to match the 901's Monolithic upper and gas block sight, and case it all up together. But just my luck, they seem to have dried up. I do have a line on a couple of the LE6944CK uppers. Looks the same just with a 14.5" barrel . But If I went this route I would have to Pin/Weld a muzzle device and I'm on the fence about doing that for this Colt Kit I've been piecing together for years. Uhhhg !!!!! I have a few 6920's around and some custom builds with 14.5 pinned barrels and do like how they shoot. To keep searching for a New 6940 upper, or go with the 6944 for a more balanced firing cycle, but with a pin on muzzle device ? Decisions. Hahaaa.

I would go with whichever one you can find. Either one is like hen’s teeth, so good luck. I pair my 901 with my colt competition upper.

There is a 6944 that is already pinned that is selling on Gunbroker for a decent price. Looks new and comes in the box. There is also a used 6940 that is here in Texas that is up for sale. I guess they weren’t quite like hen’s teeth, but pretty close.

The owner of a Local Gun Shop is going to help me out with this. His distributor has several complete LE6940 in stock; and he is willing to order one for me and sell me just the complete upper for a very fair price. So it looks like my 5.56 conversion upper will be a 6940 at this point.

Also curious if anyone has experience with the Steiner P4Xi 1-4X24 scope ? I'm considering this to go with this upper in a La Rue mount. Lot of great reviews on it. My LE901 is wearing a Vortex PST 2.5-10X32 in a Nightforce Mount.

Go to the SAR Show in PHX -1st weekend of Dec,- should find uppers of all types.

Beautiful 901. Wow. I have the LaRue quick release mount on my LM8MWS 308 and it's given me no trouble. If I did it again, though, I would use a mount with 1/2 bolts like the Geissele or just a regular Warne. I just don't use the quick release function and if I were worried about changing out sights, I would carry a small box wrench in the stock. The Larue mount does mark the upper receiver rail somewhat. On the same rifle, I have a USO 1.5-6x24 with EREK elevation knob (but unfortunately in Mil/Mil). I don't think it's any heavier than the Vortex and the glass is fantastic. At 6x in bright light, I can see holes in the target at 200 (yes, even ones in the black). It's a discontinued scope and going relatively cheap for what it is.

My local shop placed the order Friday for a complete LE6940 from one of his distributors . The distributor had 7 in stock a week ago, and was down to only one left Friday, so he grabbed it for me and it’s on the way. When it gets here next week, I’ll get the complete upper for my project for $900, and he will keep the Lower to sell in his shop. I also picked up a like new Troy rear folding sight last week for $50 to match the factory one on the 901. Getting closer.

The Kit is coming together. I have a Smith Enterprises Vortex Flash Hider on order for the 6940 upper to match the one on the 901. The Acog is off another carbine for the Photo. I like it on here, but it’s going back on its 6920. I may save awhile and get another TA02 for it but with a Chevron reticle. The shop I got it from was kind enough to order a complete rifle and sell me just the upper from it for my project. Great guys. And he gave me the complete sealed accessory package as well. I’d like to upgrade the optic on the 901 at some point as well, but no hurry. It’s currently a Vortex PST 2.5-10 X 32 in a Nightforce Mount. Nice scope, but a Leupold Mark 6 , 3-18 is on my mind for it someday maybe.

I gave the new 6940 upper a detailed cleaning last night and gave it a close once over. I noticed the Bolt Carrier does not have the typical "C" stamped on it on the left side. It does have the typical small white paint mark and MPC engraving on the bolt itself. Is this the new normal ? Not worried, just something different I noticed. I checked 5 recent Colt carriers I have and all have the "C". Thanks.

My Colt 901 family. On the bottom is a Colt MARC 901 in factory FDE with a Trijicon VCOG, the upper in the middle is a Colt 6944CK upper (14.5" barrel) with a Smith Enterprise Vortex flash hider pinned and welded and a Trijicon MRO, the upper on top is a Colt 6960 Combat Unit Carbine with Magpul BUIS. I have a Smith Enterprise 7.62m Windtalker suppressor that works on both the 901 and the 6944 (and the Combat Unit Carbine if I add a Vortex flash hider). I am looking for an optic for the 6944, the Trijicon ACOG TA02 is the front runner, but I am waiting on what comes out of Shot Show 2018.

Very nice set-up. So far I really like the ACOG TA02 on my 6940 upper in my kit ! The battery power just makes a lot of sense for certain situations/users in my opinion.
