I picked up Combat Commander in 9mm and I'm planning on getting a 38 super barrel for it.

I would prefer to get a Colt original barrel and need to know what price range I should be looking to pay for it.

If I have to go after market which non Colt barrel is worth buying?

I already have some magazines for 38 super so no worries there.

If this is an older Commander with the smaller diameter barrel you will probably need a barrel bushing too. My first choice would be a current Colt barrel. I'm not sure if they are available on their web-site.
We bought a Sarco barrel in 9mm for a .38 Super Commander. Cost about 50 bucks and is pretty nice IMO, especially for the price. These might require a little bit of fitting ours did:
.38 Super Barrel - 4 1/4" Commander Roto

Also check Brownells site.

too bad you're not looking for a 45 barrel. i have a factory colt 45acp barrel i believe it has the link and pin too in new condition for a commander. i'd want around 70 dollars for it and i'd figure a factory 38super barrel should be around the same price range.

That's a great option that I'm surprised more people don't use .... b/c the whole change over is really quick.

I suggest turning over every rock on the various auction sites and holding out for a correct Colt barrel.

And please let us know how it goes.

A correct Colt barrel may not be all too difficult to find alot of them were changed out for barrels that headspaced on the case and not the rim. Actually the later Series 80 barrels headspaced on the case anyway.
We have a Colt Commander 1991A1, roll marked 'COMMANDER MODEL" this gun has the small diameter barrel, and I got an extra barrel bushing on e-Bay just to have. This is the pistol that I installed the Sarco barrel in. Bought the barrel and a Colt 9mm magazine. Works fine, and works fine with the Super 38 mags. But of course the Supers won't fit in the 9 mags.

It is a nice option, and considered getting a .40 barrel for a Delta Elite.

Thanks for posting the photo, and responses. I'm not in a hurry just yet so I'm going to look for a colt barrel, and now I know that aftermarket barrels may be a great alternative if I find I just can't wait. I'm even considering a complete upper if I find one for the right price. One thing I like about the commander is the full size frame a making a complete slide swap possible and even going to 5" if I find it.

Looking at the photos it seems that to go from 9mm to .38 Super you need a barrel w/link and bushing and a magazine? Are the recoil springs the same? Just replaced the extractor in my LWC and it was 9mm/38 Super. P1010187.jpg

Yep all you should need is the barrel, mags, and possibly the barrel bushing (depends on the barrel you use). Recoil spring is the same.

Located a 38 super Colt barrel for a fair price. Should have it next week or two. Can't wait!
