Hello! I have seen a multitude of barrel options for 1911's on ebay... can a guy just swap out barrels and have a functioning unit... I realize the clip, & recoil spring probably have to be changed.. but what about the slide, other small parts?? best to all! til...lat'r....GT

Depends on the caliber.

You can't convert a .45 to 9mm or .38 Super without an entirely new top, including slide.
The breech face is too large, being made for the larger .45.

For the same reason, you can't convert a 9mm or .38 Super to .45.

I can't remember if the 9mm and .38 Super slides are compatible.

Also, the 45 ACP ejector is much narrower than those used on 10mm, 40 S&W, 38 Super and 9mm. The frame feedramp is also cut deeper into the magazine well on the 45 ACP guns, so converting a 45 ACP to a smaller caliber may result in feeding problems.
