Colt Detective Special for me?

1864 Views 18 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Imissedagain
Good day,Was at a local range testing a new PPK/s when I spotted the Colt. Looks clean and I was told it was from the early 70's. Nice d/a and the s/a was crisp. No shroud on the erod. They let me check the timing and lockup is pretty tight. Was I a fool to leave without it? :)

It depends on the price and pictures would be great. :)
No picks today...maybe tomorrow. Cylinder had no line...clean....nice blue. Had the aluminum finger groove add on. Bore excellent. Chamber clean. Was not a steady shooter if at all.....I can get it out the door for Six.
500-600 is about what it would sell for if in a gunshop here,2 miles from the Kingdom of New York City. It sounds like a great gun.I have 3 a 1968 D.S., a 1971 nickle D,S, and a 1960 Cobra, all with tyler t grips. They all shoot like a dream.See if can bring the seller down a little as it has no box or manual. Also check Gunbroker and look @ the completed auctions to get a idea of actual selling prices.
The price is not negotiable.
Hope it will hit the barn :)
Will make some nice stocks for it.
Pics asap
Thanks to all
How does it compare to a new S&W 60?
The tyler t-grip (aluminum finger groove) is worth about 50 bucks alone....:)
HAY HAY HAY...
A pony followed me home.
Will post more over weekend.
Thanks again
I have both S&W J frames ,60, 36 ,and several Colt D frames in 2 inch. The Colt is the better revolver. Better grips ,,better sights, 6 shot cylinder ,and shoots like a full size revolver.

The Colt is a better revolver for all the reasons Lawman67 said. Thats why I own many D frame colts but have never owned a J frame S&W
The ONLY reason I have ONE J frame"Classic Chief's Special" is because I had 2 Model 640's become barrel lauchers and self destruct in my hands. I demanded they give me a Chief's Special and it went back 4 times before they replaced a faulty barrel. So much for Quality Control LOL.I will take it out once in a blue moon but only carry my Colts.
Just curious about the DS accuracy at 5, 15, 25 and 50 yards. 2" barrel shooting with both hands on a table top with hands on sand bag. Ammo type, handloads etc. Thanks
It has been my experience with Detective Specials that, unless the gun is defective, it will shoot better than you can, even at 50 yds.
Kentucky Windage when you start reaching " way out" helps. Remember the DS was designed for concealability and close in work. I do enjoy seeing how far I can go when ringing steel but it's strictly an exercise for grins.
The Detective Special seems to shoot more akin to a 4-inch service revolver for me than do the J-Frame Smith & Wesson guns. It's easier to shoot the Detective Special well than it is to shoot J-Frames. At least I have to really work at it with J-Frame guns. Was thinking about that the other day. I do like Smith & Wesson revovlers but the J-Frame is easily my least favorite.
O.k. You've convinced me to give snubbies a try.
It's a 1974 and I switched stocks, and boy does it feel nice. I've been to the range with it twice now and it is something special.

I wouldn't say "fool." But, it was an oversight to leave it. In all likelihood it's long gone. I found a Detective Special at a gun show a while back. Decent shape and price. Told the dealer I'd take a lap around the show, think about it. Went back after about half a lap, but I was too late. It was long gone. Moral of the story? Colt "Dick" Specials and old S&W Chief's Specials last about as long in the showcase as a sugar cube in hot coffee. If you want one, it's in decent shape and doesn't require a second mortgage to buy, jump on it.
2 things to note:

1. The Detective Special has the V-Spring functionality like a Python.

2. I learned a lesson from a friend at the local gun show today. Per him, there is a rule on seeing something: "If you see something you want, do not let it leave the building. If you do, you may have a hard time finding it again."

Congrats on being able to find the gun again. You were very lucky on several accounts.
Accuracy of the Detective Special? It Can outshoot you. I am the "Dinosaur Instructor" because my Colt Snubbie is always on my hip when I teach my Pistol Safety Classes.Rules @ gun show #1 You see it buy it IMMEADIATELY because it will be gone.Glad you found your D.S. now practice, practice, and more practice.......
In all honesty it was not something I had to have. But thoughts lead to action.
I'll keep working up some loads and maybe even some grips. Will post pics but very busy now.
My boy is headed over and he usually says.....for me :)
He received a NIB Diamondback 6" blued 22lr when he was ten.
Was a gift for the Mrs and a safe queen for 17 years.
He likes D frames.
