At the front of the trigger guard is the Verified Proof stamp, a P in a triangle if the stamp was done squarely. At the rear of the guard is a single letter or number which is apparently an inspection/assembly marking. Normal on all or most models after some point, I forget just when but can check back in TBOCF if someone doesn't come up with it. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Does your DS have U.S. on the rear gripstrap? Mine has the "P" on the left front trigger guard and the "U.S." on the gripstrap. It is a 1970 vintage gun also. These are in a relatively tight serial number range ... I don't have mine handy and I can't remember the exact numbers now... About 20 or so were released in the early 80s to a dealer in California... they have been floating around at shows for a while now. They letter as a US Gov't purchase. How about a photo of the "P" and some idea of the serial number???? Bob Best
I still haven't "uncovered" the gunroom from the remodel work yet, but the photo of the "p" on your gun is smaller than the "P" that I mentioned on the US guns. The "P" on my gun is about twice the size of the one you show and it is located on the front left frame not behind the trigger. My gun has a "u" where yours has the "p" and this is generally the area where Colt's assembler would place his mark. Also both of the US marked DS guns that I am familiar with are in the s/n B03xxx ... I'm told that all the other 20 US DS guns are also very close to this serial number range ...
Serial number B03661 was sold in Greg Martin's June 2006 auction and was lot 1400. I believe it went for $985 and if you have the catalog, it will probably show the US and P in the photos. (I only saw the online catalog)....
If no one posts a photo from the catalog, I will eventually get the gun safes uncovered and shoot some of mine... Bob
Finally got the mess straightened up... Here are the photos of the "U.S." and "P" markings for you... Sorry the "P" is a little blurred in the first photo but you can see it is not the same as the "p" on your gun...Bob
