To the best of my knowledge, all 2 1/2" and 4" barreled Diamondbacks had sights the same finish as the rest of the gun as the front sight was part of the barrel. 6" models had a pinned on front sight.
Gurney Brown’s “Seven Serpents” shows three 4“ nickel DB’s with integral nickel front sights and blued rear sights. However, the text makes a special comment about the rear sight being blue which clearly suggests that was uncommon (special ordered?). There is also a photo of a 4” nickel DB with both sights in blue and the front sight pinned. The text, again, makes special note of this and indicates it was special ordered. It’s my impression from reading the forum for a while that Colt aficianados give the company credit for greater consistency than it had and tend to underestimate the frequency with which variations occurred.

Follow-up: Posted this awhile back (approx. four months ago) but just received the Letter this week confirming the finish. It was listed on a local gun sale site. Younger guy bought a group of firearms from an estate. Said he wasn't into revolvers much and had no clue what the finish was. By the time I saw it and called him I was third in line. Figured I was too late, again. As luck would have it the other two interested buyers never returned the sellers call to set up a meeting. I was a little surprised when I got the phone call. Didn't even hesitate to make that short drive.

I can't believe I haven't shared here yet. It is a long story in another thread, but I picked up a very unique 2 1/2" Diamondback made in 1983. Now, 'Seven Serpents" indicates they quit making 2 1/2" in 1977, but I know for a fact that often times special requests were made. This is one of those. A unique trait of this one is the owned front sight seen on 6" barrels. This gun came from the factory in this configuration. It was in a batch of 300 bought by the Kuwait Army. Pretty amazing! She is no safe queen and I love it!

Very cool!

Production of the Diamondback ended in 1988. The serial number lookup function on the Colt website is notoriously inaccurate. A revolver listed as 1990 may have shipped in 1990 but sat in inventory for awhile. It’s also possible it could be a revolver made up of leftover parts…that was certainly not unknown.
