Colt engravers in the 1990's

I have a Single Action Army from 1994, It is engraved "D" and on the grip frame is stamped "JC" could this be the initials of the engraver and if so who may it be? Colt custom shop, Black powder frame, Nickle plated, engraved "D" with the hammer and front site engraved, fitted with one piece ivory grip with Colt gold emblems. I have done a lot of searching and have not come up with the engravers during this period. any help would be appreciated.

Interesting. I doubt this is new info for anyone. A 1994 gun that is simply "Colt Engraved" should be marked on the trigger guard under the grips as "Colt Engraved" and no engraver's initials or signature. On the other hand a "Colt Master engraved" gun should have both the engraver's signature and "Colt Engraved" on the front strap of the trigger guard.

Th archives letter should be specific on both counts. No engraver listed for a "Colt Engraved" gun. Master engraved will generally have the engraver's name on the gun (often in more than one place) and on the Colt letter.

4 years ago ...which clearly is not 1994.... a "Colt Engraved" SAA gun at a D level just for the engraving was $3600. A master engraved Colt @ D level, engraving only was $13,000.

I'd likely want to check and then photograph what is under the grips.

Colt has not for many years marked the engravers name on the firearms. It is done that way on purpose. Call and ask if there is any doubt. :)
I have a very long list of engravers and the only JC would be Joyce Carroll. I have never seen any of her work.
Is it possible that Joyce Carroll was engraving in the 90's? if so my gun may have been engraved by her.

I saw a comment by Ms Carrol (if it is the same person) in 12/18 where she mentioned working for Jim Granger @ www.customfret.com from 2000 to 2018. She might still be working there.

I have had a correspondence with Joice Carrol and she stated that she never engraved for the Colt factor, but had don a number of Colt firearms. I have taken my grips off and the stamp is not JC as I was told when I purchased the gun, it is just "J". back to square one.

The pattern and style identify them as Nimschke engraved. Very nice examples.

I have 50 plus cap guns and many of them have the high quality engraving like your guns. I finely found roll caps (not cheep) for some of my older guns and my 7 year old grandson thinks that's great. He puts on a holster, one of my western hats plus a Red Rider BB gun and he is a cowboy.

I'd guess the "J" is an inspector's mark and not a engraver's signature.

Thank you, I was hopeful that I could ID the engraver. I guess not, the Colt letter states "D" engraved and engraver not listed. It is what it is. It still takes a few Pop bottle refunds ($) to acquire an engraved Colt.
