Anyone have information at hand on why barrel markings for pre 1880 revolvers have either "New York, US America" or "Hartford, CT, USA"? Seems these addresses were used during the same period of time. Did they move from New York to Hartford? Was there a cut-off date where the addresses changed? Or did they have two different plants for manufacturing. Just curious.

Colt had an office in NY and used that address because "New York" was more well known/prestigious than Hartford. Then, prior to the Civil War, there was a large anti-slavery movement in NY. Colt, not wanting to "offend" Southerners, began to use the Hartford address to distance his name from NY. Later in the percussion period the company went back to the NY address until finally settling on the Hartford address by the time the of the SAA.

The above is brief and quick, off the top of my head, but should give you an idea.
