Hi Guys I was taking my ccw class today when I had the wierdest things happen. I used my pre 70 series gold cup national match today for class. I had some bad problems with the mags. I bought new 7 round blue colt mags with the horse logo on them. the first mag the base plat came off the mag after 10 shots. and the spring fell out of the bottom. I figgered ok so i got a bad mag. I then used the second colt mag I purchased and the same thing happened after 10 rounds the base plate fell off. I had to barow a chip mccormic mag from the range to compleat my training. whats the deal? anyone else have problems with factory colt mags?

I'll chime in. I have had so many problems with Colt mags over the years that I could not tell you the last time I even tried one. I have a dozen 1911's or so and I shoot 2-3 times a week, always including one of 3 that I carry daily (not all at once /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ). When I get a gun that has a factory mag, unless it is something I do not intend to shoot, the mag immediately goes in a box in the closet. It gets replaced with a Wilson.

I will use them until I start having problems with them. I have heard some say that they have trouble with the synthetic follower getting to a point that it will not lock the slide open, but I have not had that issue with any of mine, and I know I have some that have been in use for 10 years or so.

Over the years, I saw few problems with genuine Colt factory magazines.

The operative words are "Genuine Colt factory".
The problem these days is that there is a wave of "replica" magazines being sold that have Colt markings on them but AREN'T genuine Colt magazines.

As you would expect, many of these are being sold AS the real thing, either because the seller honestly believes them to be genuine, or is running a rip-off.

It's possible you got a batch of those.

I don't know which are the best magazines. I do know that when I asked Bill Laughridge at Cylinder and Slide for magazine advice, he said that in his experience Colt factory magazines were as good as any.
