Colt New Army/Navy questions

I have just taken possession of a New Army/Navy model 1894 that serials out at 1895. Wood grips, butt stamp and RAC stamp lean it toward a military version. All numbers match. However, underside of barrel doesn't say US. Property. Serial numbers are there too. Gun times right on, and locks up like a Colt should. Have shot .38 S&W short and long through it without a hitch. I'm guessing .38 special might be a bit much? These military models came with no lanyard ring? Markings look too crisp for a re-blue. Bluing would rate out about 98%. Is it possible for Military versions to retain this much bluing? Smooth Walnut grips. Penciled serial number on inside of both grips. I like the gun (or I wouldn't have bought it). Just wondering if I've bought somebody's clever deception. As always with me there will be no pictures. Sorry.

These had bored-through chambers, so .38 Special cartridges would fit OK. If you reload, a minimum starter load with a lead bullet should be safe. So should factory wadcutter target loads, ideally the hollow base bullet type that would expand to fill the bore. I don't believe I would fire anything else in .38 Special just to be safe.
