Friend of mine has a new service in 44-40. I didn't even know they came like that. I have my grandfathers that was .455 but was rechambered to .45colt by colt. The bad news is it has been replated in nickel so it isn't original and has some smooth black stocks which I sure aren't original. So he asked if I wanted to buy it. It is a colt I don't have so I am definitely interested but no idea what I should offer him that is fair and not a serious low ball.

Yes, the New Service was chambered in .44-40. The New Service was chambered in .22LR (one only), .357 Magnum, .38 Special, .38-40, .44-40, .44 Russian, .44 Special, .450 Eley, .455 Eley, .476 Eley, .45 ACP, .45 Colt. (Did I miss any?)

Such a severely modified revolver has almost no value to me, but to some, it may be worth a few hundred as a "shooter." I would rather save my "few hundred" and put it with a "few more hundred" and buy a well-worn ORIGINAL "shooter." A severely modified "shooter" will always be a dog. Unless you want to run a "dog shelter," I would avoid it.

"Dog shelter" - I love it. That exactly describes my accumulation of Colt rescues. Any clean bored, properly functioning New Service is worth at least $300 as a shooter regardless of finish.
I've got an old S&W .44 spcl. DA made in the 1920's that was "engraved by mother nature" but the chambers & bore are non pitted & it shoots just fine & $300, is exactly what I paid for it.

Somebody has to take in these neglected but great old Colts and give them a nice home. If it functions good and has a reasonably decent bore offer $350 to $375 and shoot it and enjoy it. I have Colts that are beaters and NIB. I enjoy them all. But I kind of have a soft spot for the beaters because I don't worry about the finish much and can just shoot them and use them as they were intended. As always, JMHO.

According to Whittington, .44 WCF was the second most popular New Service Commercial caliber following .45 Colt.
