I just purchased a Colt revolver with the markings "Colt Official Police 38" stamped on the left side of the barrel. The serial number is 4748xx.

Anyone have any idea when this was made?

Thanks,
Bob

Can't find any other markings on it. The serial number is written on the backside of the grips also (which are hard rubber).

It has a squre butt and is chambered for the 38 special. The barrel is 6'. It is blued.

Your serial number comes up as a 1922 Army Special.
The numbers that year started at 466000, and ended at 485999.

The Colt Army Special was made from 1908 until 1927 when Colt simply renamed it as the Official Police.

The gun was exactly the same other than the name change.

Since all parts interchanged 100%, it sounds very much like you have an Army Special that was re-barreled somewhere along the line with an Official Police barrel.

The grips on your gun do sound like the style that would be original to an Army Special, which were hard black "Gutta Percha" rubber.
These had molded-in checkering, and the word COLT at the top.
