OK, this is a new one on me. I believe it was made in the early 90's. Picture box, full underlug ejector, Colt pachmeyer style grips 4 inch barrel and blued. Does anyone have an idea what this is worth? Is it worth getting a Colt Letter on and does anyone have any idea how many were made considering it is a fairly new production

These were the last of the Police Positives. Made in 1994. Not sure about the value, a search of Gunbroker completed auctions should give you a good idea. The link provided by Uplander gives good information.

That last iteration of the Police Positive Special pretty much got away from its origins as a powerful, lightweight carry revolver...the full barrel lug adds weight which does help in keeping it steady. Regardless...it's an excellent revolver and worthy of the name. Mine sits in my office desk drawer waiting should it be needed.

It's worst attribute was its timing...being released when demand for revolvers was waning and self-loaders were getting all the sales and attention.

Value is probably in the $600-$850 or so depending on condition and location. As a one year only Colt it will never have the market value of the Viper...another one year Colt but carries a snake name. Many aren't even aware of its existence so values are less than they might be otherwise.

It is the only one I have ever observed so I bought it. Snidley Whiplash is right, rare does not always equal expensive or collectible. But in the box with papers and unturned it will sit on the shelf next to a few expensive Colts at least. Thanks to you all!

smkummer,
I got a call that an older gent wished to part with a NIB Colt Detective Special. I called and we set up a meeting at his house. I asked him if he knew what he wanted for the pistol and he replied $502 is my lowest price. He went to a back room and came out with the Colt Police Positive. I immediately knew it wasn't a Detective Special and explained it to him. The manual in the box said Agent, Detective Special and Police Positive. He thought for some reason it was a Detective Special. I liked the pistol anyway and produced $520 but he did not have change. I asked if he really needed the $2 and he said he would not sell with out the $2. I advised I would go to the gas station, buy gum and be back with $2. He laughed and said he would trust me to put $2 in his mail box in the next couple days. A deal is a deal so I went and got change. When I paid him he asked if I was curious why he was stuck on $502. I advised I sure was! He handed me the hangtag from when he bought it and it read $251. He advised that if he couldn't double his money on the Colt he wasn't going to sell!He was quite a character and I would stop by for coffee every once in awhile and we would swap lies. He passed last year from cancer so....a sad ending

Great story, thanks for sharing. I remember those guns including the reintroduced detective special were selling under $300 in the mid 90’s from distributors. You still got a good deal.

Personally I don't believe a Colt letter is necessary. Production was limited to about a year. The revolvers are undervalued based on quality and accuracy. I had the opportunity to shoot mine before purchase. Put 4 different loads through it on 60 m steel turkeys. It was easy to get the hold for each loading while hitting the steel with Regularity. Wouldn't sell mine for twice the purchase price.
