My local archery store occasionally gets in a pistol to sell. They just txted me with this pre woodsman. They are asking $495. Is this a fair price?

Run...do not walk...and buy that pistol! Less if you can negotiate but it's a more than fair price. They must have gotten it really cheap.

May have to look up serial number ranges, but check takedown on blackstrap for metal checkering to see if high velocity is ok to shoot.

That's quite cheap from a gun shop and from even an individual seller. Unless the barrel is rusted out or bulged. Check that.

Thanks for the responses. I have shooting bows and buying guns from the seller for many years, gotten generally good deals. This gun is from collection of a retired doctor in bad health. Have not seen it yet but my guess is 80-85% condition. He thinks similar guns are $6-800 in blue book and so he is giving me a good deal. So what exactly should I look for "Blackstrap checkering" to see if it is good go shoot? Anything else I should check out. Will also check to see if barrel is rusted. BTW serial number is 6879

I wouldn't worry about high velocity ammunition. It will do well with standard velocity which most use in target type pistols. Too good a deal to pass up.

If the bore is good.....test fire if they have a range, then dont let anyone else look at it

Serial number 6879 = MFG. 1918
Based on the Magazine Floor Plate, it is a factory Colt example and I would presume it is correct for the year.
Buy the Pre-Woodsman.

Thanks for the quick responses. Picked up the pre woodsman. It appears to be in better condition than expected. Some wear on muzzle and receiver but blue is nice and no rust or pitting. Some more photos attached. Any more info

is appreciated.

Not a period correct Magazine (1939 to 1947) but matters not. Should be a brass Follower Type 2 1916 to 1919+/-, easy enough to find but again, matters not...
Shoot Standard Velocity ammunition and enjoy your Pre-Woodsman.

I had much better luck shooting this one even though the front sight bead is half the width of my previous one (posted above). This one is a Colt Woodsman Target from 1928, Serial# 62950. Some holster wear but otherwise quite nice. It still has the original standard velocity only mainspring...

Clean and oil it, and you have a classic sportsman's .22. They feel great in the hand and point well.
