Just came upon a Colt SAA with base pin screw in frame in front of frame and a small front sight that seems to be welded to the barrel.

Yes the base(cylinder) pin is held in by a screw in the front of the frame underneath the pin itself. And the front sight seems to be welded in, kind of a small sight (it's a fixed sighted model) and not the typical Colt SAA sight.

Rather new looking gun, sn around 288xxx. Is it fake?

Thanks.

I certainly agree of course. Any frame after ~ # 164,000 "normally" would have the cross latch cyl pin retainer. I say normally because it's not unheard of for an old BP style frame to be dredged up out of inventory and assembled.

But whether or not that's the case with the OP's gun is a whole 'nother story w/o very close inspection. The existence of the welded on front sight, for example, does not bode well for the gun's originality.
