I suspect that when hmaag posted the pictures, one of the pictures covered up the first digit of the serial number. My guess is the SN is probably 15773; maybe 25773. I hope hmaag will respond. With the 2-line patent dates where the top line is weak, that means it is quite early. I don't know the exact SN range where that die started showing a weak first line, but I think it is document in one of Kopec's books.

Error on my part! I looked in the Kopec & Fenn book (Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers a Continuing Study) and the gun pictured by hmaag is the same one they have in their book on page 268 (Fig. 30-5).
It is a documented Custer Battle revolver!! A great piece of history as Chaffee indicated.

hmaag; Very nice looking Etched Panel! Just out of curiosity, when in 1884 did your 71/2 inch Etched Panel ship? My 5 1/2 inch Etched Panel shipped to Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Company on August 6, 1884. However, mine has Eagle Hard Rubber stocks.

hmaag: The rare Cavalry from a couple days ago along with these two beauties shows you have some real treasures. I hope you will post some more pictures of your collection.

The oldest, an Open Top .44 RF in the serial 2xx and the newest, a 44-40, shipped late in 1937. It's in a custom case, made in the Rolex Manufactory, Geneva. I keep the Frontier because I'm also born late in 1937

Very nice ! SAPD is that San Antonio PD ? Did you letter it ?

@guy sajer, the letter was sent December 21 1966 to a previous owner. Sold & shipped to :City of San Antonio Police Department, San Antonio, Texas. Special feature: SAPD #71 on butt.
Date of Shipment: Nov. 17 1927.

That's a centerpiece SAA

hmaag: I would like to view the pictures of these two SAA's, but I cannot get them to open.

I was only able to see the SAPD gun .

hmaag: That 1937 SAA is a real beauty!! It even has the carved ivories like Patton had on his SAA. Do those letter with the gun?

Saintclair, Kathy Hoyt, was unable to find any information about the Frontier. The gun was in posession of one of my friends since the end of the 2nd World War. So I think it's genuine.

The Open Top was shipped August 14 1872 to Spies, Kissam Co. New York. Stocks: Not listed, Finish: Blue. The frame is marked Colts Patent, not the Two July Patent, so the frame was possibly a surplus C&B frame.
