hmaag: The Frontier Six Shooters had some barrel caliber marking changes during the period your gun was produced. How is yours marked? Could you post a picture of the "Roll-die markings"? I ask this because only a very few such guns (44-40) during the period your was made have shown up in pictures in the literature.
Here is one my newest Colt SAA's Serial # 3255XX. Waiting for the Letter. EDIT: Shipped in 1913 to Phelps dodge, Morenci, AZ but unfortunately in Blue finish. If this gun could talk!!!

Saintclair, Kathy Hoyt, was unable to find any information about the Frontier. The gun was in posession of one of my friends since the end of the 2nd World War. So I think it's genuine.

The Open Top was shipped August 14 1872 to Spies, Kissam Co. New York. Stocks: Not listed, Finish: Blue. The frame is marked Colts Patent, not the Two July Patent, so the frame was possibly a surplus C&B frame.
Hans
Hans, If you don't mind...what's the serial on your Open Top? I had #202, Navy sized ivory grips with Colt's Patent stamping.

One a Helfricht engraved .45, shipped 1893 to E.J. Post & Company, Albuquerque. The other shipped 1884 to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co, Chicago

Wow hmaag! That's almost a twin to mine. 144xxx, no letter, but 1892 or so, .44-40. I've no idea when or where mine was engraved though...

Rick,
The Open Top serial is 247, shipped to Spies Kissam Co, NY, Number of same type gund in shippmment: 25. The revolver came 1991 to Switzerland.
Chaffee,
The most factory engraved Colts 1871 - 1921 were engraved in Helfrichts shop. The loading gate of yours is typical Helfricht style. Request a Colt letter.

Here's a nickel 44-40 etched 4-3/4" barrel with eagles shipped to Hartley and Graham in NYC. 128,000 serial range....one of the last etched before they transitioned to the rolled "colt frontier six shooter" barrel logo.

My pleasure! I've got a 5-1/2 in nearly the same condition in the 108,000 serial range. Old-Colts and I are joking that this pair of nickel etched barrel guns is going to make me buy a 7-1/2" nickel with eagles....LOL
My only SAA.3rd generation w/pau ferro stocks.
