Just saw the tattered and stained Colt box and insert sell in the classified section and was wondering if any members have discovered a safe and sane way to clean the stained styrofoam inserts without doing more damage to the insert. I have experimented with everything I can think of from soft brushes and detergent to running them through mama's dishwasher, with less than stellar results. Does anybody have a magic formula to remove the oil and rust stains from the white styrofoam, that does not harm the styrofoam?

The styrofoam is oil based, so it would seem that anything that would remove the oil could possibly damage the styrofoam. It was great for shipping pistols, but doesn't hold up well over the long run.

Same situation with my LW Colt OACP styro. It's a bit tattered and stained even though I've never stored the weapon in it since I bought it 22 years ago. I'm afraid to but a toothbrush or anything else on it since I fear it will just disintegrate.
