Colt38\'s Officers Model Special

Colt38 asked me to post these, which qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment. For some reason the OMS really trips my trigger, and I've never found one in this condition at the price he paid. Oh well...

Simply a masterpiece(no pun intended)! Has it been fired? Will it be a safe queen,or find a home on the range? Watch for lead deposits staining the front sides of cylinder between the flutes. Gets these right off, after shooting with Hoppes,so it wont hurt that superb finish. Bud

Bullet Bob, nice pictures and I am green with envy.
What's going on with Colt38, first he has you posting pictures of his oustandingly beautiful engraver Colt 357, and now he has you popping out these pictures of his gorgeous OMS? Where is he finding these gems, has he found some dusty, grungy, old back in the alley, not open since 1950, gunshop that he won't even tell you about or maybe he's "rolling" little old ladies on their way to the bank safe deposit box with their husband collection? I don't know, but he sure seems to come up with some mighty fine looking shooting irons.
As I said, I am envious, but at the same time glad someone who will take care of and give these guns a good home got them.

Re: Colt38\'s Officers Model Special

I've never met Mr Colt38; he had posted some time ago about buying these guns, and asked if someone could post pictures for him, as he didn't know how yet. So, he emails the pictures to me, and I post 'em. It's probably a good thing I'm not close enough to get my mitts on this OMS while his back is turned!

THE "TRUTH": Actually, I met a little old lady(By accident!)as I was walking down the street! Then, she "whistled" at me(And when I came over to see her(She offered me a cup of tea!)and(Before I knew it?)we were discussing guns! At that moment(She cuddled up next to me!)and started speaking "Sweet nothin's"(In my ear)! This got me really nervous(Until I jumped!) whenever she told me of her deep, dark secret(about the whereabout's, of the local Gun Shop(Where she had "Consigned" her husband's 1950's gun collection)! She wanted me to stay a little bit longer(But, I just told her, that I had to run!(On down to that Gun Shop(That is!)! Honestly, finding this OMS(And, the "Engraved" Colt 357!)was just a very "Lucky" happening! I appreciate everyone's "Wonderful" comments(About this "Beautiful" Colt OMS)! And, I'm "Thankful" to Bob(For posting the above pictures, for me!

Since I'm just beginning(In the world, of collecting(A few!)Colt's-who knows, which direction, this might lead me? And, if I should ever decide, not to "Collect" Colt "Officer's Model" revolvers-then(In that case)I will make this OMS, available to one of my fellow, Colt, "Forum" members(Who I know would "Appreciate this gun!)?

No, I'm not going to shoot this OMS! Instead, I'll just keep it, as a "Safe Queen"!

Colt38,
Nice gun, did you get the original rear sight with it, if not you may want to keep an eye open for one. If you got it with the gun put it back on, it's a much, much, better sight than what's on it now, and don't forget the original stocks, then you will really have a nice original Colt.

Re: Colt38\'s Officers Model Special

1)The rear sight, is the one that was on this gun, when I purchased it! I did not get the original style, rear sight with the gun? I have no idea, why it might have been changed? I will replace the rear sight, with the original(If I can ever find one(And, in the same condition, as this OMS, is in?)?

2)I also, didn't get the original, Coltwood stocks(Although, the wood Colt stocks are much nicer(I agree, that to keep this OMS, original, that I must get a set of the original, Coltwood stocks!))?

3)Which are the correct, Coltwood stocks(For this OMS, made in year, 1950)the ones that are all plastic(Including the moulded in, plastic, image of the Colt emblem)or the Coltwood stocks, that are bakelite(Or, plastic)but, with a real, silver, Colt emblem(Embedded, in the stocks)?

I P:

What looks different about the Coltmaster sight on yours? The pictures I looked at of yours were a little dark to tell.

As far as the stocks go, Wilson does state that all OMS' had coltwood plastic, but the CCA has developed that some at the end of the run before the switch to OMM's might have had the wooden stocks put on the OMM's, and this forum's own dfariswheel has put forth that supposition in an earlier thread.

I think that when it comes to gun manufacturing, never say never!

Re: Colt38\'s Officers Model Special

To me, it doesn't seem logical, that whomever had originally bought this OMS, would have changed the rear sights on this gun(Just to leave it in it's Gun Box(To display it!)rather than to just go target shooting with it!)? Anyway, the rear of the sight, is straight accross(Not pointed, towards the back)! Bob, I'll try to get a good(Close-up)picture of the rear sight, and will send it to you, for your "Evaluation"(Once it is available)!

Based upon how my gun appears, I'd like to think that the wood stocks, were put on at the Colt factory? In that case, then these stocks, would already be original? But(If not?)then, the question(In my mind!)would be, whether or not(In 1950, when my OMS, was made!)if Colt, had installed the cheapest looking, "Coltwood" stocks(Or the similar, plastic(Or, "Bakelite")"Coltwood" stocks(But, with real(Silver)Colt medallions, embedded in them!))? Except for being plastic, "Coltwood", these stocks, would look just like the wood stocks, on my OMS, now!

Re: Colt38\'s Officers Model Special

Bullet Bob,
I don't think you ever seen a picture of mine so I'm not sure who's you were looking at. I don't shoot or collect Post War guns, I'm only into the Pre War Target guns. I only know a bit about the Post War guns from the catalogs I have collected over the years.

Only trying to help Colt38 with info on what he may want to look for if he want's to have his gun "original" as Mfg.

As far as the rear sight goes it's not even close to looking like a ColtMaster rear sight. Check out a Colt catalog from when the OMS was made and it's very easy to see what they look like.

The rear sight on Colt38's gun is one of the cheap Micro rear sights. I don't know why someone would take off a high end sight like a ColtMaster ( very high quality ) and put on a low end sight like a Micro that never seemed to be able to hold it's adjustments, especialy a Target Shooter, and it's very hard to beleive that Colt would have done it, but. As for the stocks, Colt would or could have used wood stocks on most any of there guns, the only way to know for sure is to talk to Colt, same for engraved guns.

Would you happen to have an extra Colt OMS catalog, that I could purchase from you(or, some copies of it?)? My OMS was made in 1950!

Ira Paine:

1)Yes, I would appreciate your emailing me the pictures of the OMS rear sight!

2)Also, in view of the fact, that you don't have any extra Colt OMS catalogs-what about the possibility, of getting some photocopies from you, of the OMS catalog? I will certainly pay, for this "Privilege"(If possible?)!

Re: Colt38\'s Officers Model Special

My eyes were so diverted by the incorrect wood stocks that I did not notice the altered rear sight! Wow, are my powers of observation slipping! I had best be careful in buying anything until I retrain myself.

I wonder if all Coltmaster rear sights are the same, such as found on the revolvers and the Conversion Units? I will have to dig out my OMS and a same-vintage Conversion Unit and compare the rear sights. The reason this is important is that it would increase the "pool" of Coltmaster rear sights available.

As to why such a nice gun would be altered but not be used, it is common for people who do not shoot much to modify guns to meet some standard they have seen and then never use them. I have seen several poeple invest big bucks in a "race gun" and then never shoot it more than a few times because they just want what the "big boys" have, but do not compete in "big boy" games.

Re: Colt38\'s Officers Model Special

Colt38 is not the only one out there with an OMS with Micro rear sights, I have an OMS 38 recently required from another forum member with the Micro rear sights. I knew they were not the original Coltmasters when I purchased it. Perhaps the conversion was more common than current opinion. The original Coltmaster sights are probably sitting in a drawer with the original Coltwood stocks that had also been replaced with the later full checkered silver medallion target stocks. Maybe the original owner saw the change Colt made with the OMM and didn't want their OMS to look "retro".

Best of luck on finding original Coltmaster sights, I've been down my list of obsolete Colt parts suppliers and generally get a sympathetic chuckle and a "you are kidding right?".

Ira Paine:

1)Yes, I received your pictures of the OMS sights! I appreciate this! Thank you! I see exactly what you mean, about the "Coltmaster" sight being different!

2)I won't mind waiting, until you eventually, come down from the mountains, to Town, to enable you to make copies, of whatever you have, on the OMS(As it will be worth the wait)! Be sure to include, whatever the charges are(And I will remit, promptly!)?
