Colt still offers the Sheriffs models.

According to Don Wilkerson's book, there were slightly more than 4,000 3" models produced from 1980 through 1985 cal .44-40. There were 3 versions, standard blue, Royal Blue, and Nickel. The Royal Blue and Nickel were supplied with dual cylinders (.44 Special) and walnut grips. (These are from the initial standard production).

There were also a number of .45 models made around 1985 with 3 and 4 " barrels, I believe these all had the so-called "Smokeless Frame". After 1984-85 the Custom Shop also supplied some with other grip materials at additional cost.

There is no such thing as 4th generation guns.

 

That depends on how you classify them... A number of collectors consider the change in location of the S and the A to the beginning and end of the serial number to be the beginning of the 4th generation guns and you hear that term used alot... Bob

 

Color case hardened hammer on late 3rd Gen Sheriff's Model

I saw S69388A at a show last week. .45, black powder frame, color case hardened frame but color case hardened hammer as well. Was it offered with a case hardened hammer?
